Professors

J. David Farrar, Ph.D.

Associate Professor
Department of Immunology
UT Southwestern Medical Center

The Farrar Lab is generally interesting in understanding how external signals regulate T cell function and development. We use both human and mouse models to investigate mechanisms of T cell regulation by cytokines and neurotransmitters. Our research is focused on two main topics: 1) Suppression of allergic diseases by type I interferon; 2) Control of immune responses by the sympathetic nervous system.

Michelle A. Gill, M.D., Ph.D.

Associate Professor
Department of Immunology, Pediatrics
UT Southwestern Medical Center

Our laboratory studies immune responses to allergens and respiratory viruses in humans. We are specifically interested in investigating mechanisms underlying IgE and allergen-mediated inhibition of innate antiviral responses and how this relates to the pathogenesis of diseases including allergic rhinitis and asthma. With expertise evaluating transcriptional and functional responses in dendritic cells and monocytes, we are currently focused on translational projects evaluating the role of these cells in models of human viral infection and allergic inflammation.

Yang Xie, Ph.D.

Associate Professor
Director of Quantitative Biomedical Research Center
Department of Clinical Sciences, Bioinformatics
UT Southwestern Medical Center

Yang Xie, Ph.D., is an established biostatistician, who bridges the gap between clinical and basic biomedical research. She founded the QBRC, which has grown from two faculty members to 30 members in the last four years; she led efforts to coordinate bioinformatics research on campus; and she is leading the Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Database cores for several major biomedical research projects.

J. Andrew Bird, M.D.

Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Director, Food Allergy Center, Children’s Medical Center
Division of Allergy and Immunology
UT Southwestern Medical Center

Dr. Bird’s primary research interests are in understanding and treating life-threatening reactions to foods and further understanding the immediate immunologic response to allergens. He has extensive experience in conducting food allergen challenges and nasal allergen challenges. He is currently working with colleagues in several ongoing clinical trials using food proteins for immunotherapy.
