Project 3
Summary
The goal of Project 3 is to determine if electrical blockade of the vagal trunks at the level of the gastric cardia (VBLOC) alters hepatic and peripheral glucose metabolism in humans. We will study the effects of acute vagal blockade on hepatic metabolism in obese patients (with diabetes or pre-diabetes) implanted with vagal modulators.
Questions
Is basal hepatic glucose production altered during vagal blockade?
Is vagal blockade associated with changes in insulin sensitivity in liver, muscle, or adipose tissue?
Is vagal blockade associated with a change in whole-body oxidation rates?
Is nutrient selection for oxidative metabolism altered?
